James Brown, 74, of Plymouth, New Hampshire passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Granite VNA Hospice House in Concord New Hampshire after a brief illness during which he showed great strength and courage.
He was born in New Bedford on February 7, 1948 to the late William and Dorothy (Houle) Brown and lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to New Hampshire.
Jim attended New Bedford High School and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Southeastern Massachusetts University.
He served in the United States Army as a paratrooper in both the 101st and the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. During that time, he was promoted to Sergeant and received the Medal of Honor after risking his life to rescue another service member from a burning aircraft. Jim was also part of the Teamsters Union working as a truck driver before becoming a New Bedford Police Officer in 1974. Jim later worked for several social service agencies both in New Bedford and in New Hampshire.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a dedicated family man who loved his family above all and will always be remembered for his playful and compassionate spirit.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Brown of New Bedford; his daughter, Sandra Brown of Ellsworth, New Hampshire; six grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Allison, Brandon, Andrew, and Sean; three great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Bryson, and Aubrey; his former spouse, Barbara Costa-Coholan; and two sisters, Donna and Lorie.
He was predeceased by his sister Connie.
