Barbara R. (Smead) Smith 102 formerly of Worcester, MA and Fort Myers, FL died peacefully on June 30, 2022 at the Hanover Hill Heath Care Center in Manchester, NH . Barbara was born in Greenfield, MA to Forrest N. and Mildred R. (Macarty) Smead on July 13, 1919. While growing up, she enjoyed running track, playing basketball, tennis, skiing and becoming a Golden Eagle Girl Scout. Upon Greenfield High School graduation in 1937, she was proud to become an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) which she continued for the rest of her life. Barbara attended Worcester Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing obtaining her Registered Nursing (RN) degree in 1940.
On June 28, 1941, she married Everett P. Smith settling in Worcester after he returned from the service in the Navy. Barbara was a member of the Women’s Club at the Worcester First Baptist Church. She and Everett organized, setup and helped to cook barbecues for 40 at their home and church dinners for 300. They also supported the church’s Boy Scouts and youth groups.
All her life she liked having vegetables fresh from her garden, growing flowers, feeding birds and going to the ocean, especially York Beach Maine. It was common for her to listen or watch the Red Sox or Celtics while knitting for family and church activities. There was always a jigsaw puzzle in progress nearby. We remember her constant smile, positive kind attitude, and her willingness to support family and friends as a nurse.
After her retirement in Florida, she was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers. She welcomed friends for a cup of tea or cookies and ice cream. She also looked forward to visits of relatives from up-north. Most days included a game of Scrabble or King-In-The-Corner.
She is survived by her sister, Shirley E. Smead of Greenfield, MA, two sons, Alan F. Smith of Worcester, MA and Jeffrey E. Smith and wife Joan of Londonderry, NH, two granddaughters Heather J. Litman and husband Kenneth of Westborough, MA and Deborah J. Ingram and husband Philip Sr of Perryville, MD, three great-grandchildren Daniel, Elizabeth and Grace. She is predeceased by her husband Everett in 1997, her sister Phyllis L. Davis and brother Forrest N. Smead Jr.
Following cremation, a graveside service will be held at a later date beside her husband at the North Meadow Cemetery in Greenfield, MA next to the Smead family farm where she grew up.
