Dartmouth - Antonio ‘Tony’ A. Afonso, 76, passed away peacefully at home on June 26,2022.
Tony was born in Figueira da Foz, Portugal in 1945. He was the son of Alfredo Augusto of Trancoso, Portugal and Conceição Afonso of Figueira da Foz, Portugal. He married his Loving wife Maria 49 years ago and raised 3 children.
Tony began a career as a marine electrician upon completion of his degree in 1964. He simultaneously played the guitar and sang with 2 different bands at a plethora of events. He passed along his talent and love for music to his children who all played instruments at early ages.
Tony became very well known in the community forming many business and personal relationships. He was one of the founding members of the United Fishermen's club and participated in the Committee for the Day of Portugal in NB, to name a few. A prolific entrepreneur throughout his lifetime, Tony is best known for the Star Oil Company.
Tony was an avid golfer, playing 18 holes twice per week. He wasn’t shy about sharing his best score and preferred to bring his favorite caddy. He often enjoyed watching golf and never missed a ‘Sporting” game on TV, sometimes, watching both at the same time. He had a multitude of talents that included tinkering with tools and making things out of wood. He dabbled as any sort of tradesman when the occasion called for it. He could never let you steal the ball while playing soccer with him and could bounce a coin off his shoe straight into his shirt pocket. Tony loved to be with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren most of all.
Tony had a heart of gold, was a friend to all and will be dearly missed.
Tony leaves behind his beloved wife, Maria; his 3 adult children, Daniel Afonso, Paula Afonso (fiancé, Robert Roderiques), and Cathleen Barker (married to Jason Barker); his brother and sister Jose Vidal and Conceição Puga; seven grandchildren: Julia Barker, Patrick Barker, Evan Amaral, Samantha Barker, Miles Afonso, Gwen Afonso, and Amber Afonso; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude’s Hospital in his name.
