Mr. John J. Abreu, Sr., a lifelong resident of Woburn passed away peacefully, Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Woburn Nursing Center. He was 96. John was the beloved husband of the late Hilda M. (Pereira) Abreu. Born in Woburn he was the son of the late Victor and Mary (Rodrigues) Abreu.
John was a 1944 graduate of Woburn High School where he was an outstanding student athlete and was a member of the Baseball, Football and Basketball teams. John carried his love of sports throughout his entire life. Shortly after high school, John was inducted into the United States Army and proudly served during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant. When he returned back home from the service, he began his career in the Automobile Industry working in management for many years with United Delco of Woburn and then finishing his career with New England Toyota. Once retired, John and Hilda loved to travel with friends and family. They traveled to Portugal and throughout Europe, South America, and Alaskan Cruises. John was also passionate about golfing and also enjoyed working in his garden. However, his greatest joy was his family and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren, attending all their sporting events rain or shine. He was so proud of their many accomplishments.
John is survived by his devoted children, John J. Abreu, Jr. and his wife Mimma, Paul D. Abreu and his wife Jean Conley, Joanne Marie Doherty and her husband Bob, all of Woburn. He was the loving grandfather of Paul Abreu Jr., Alyson Abreu and her companion Matt Born, John J. Abreu III and his wife Darnyel, Justin Abreu, Jeffrey Doherty, Christopher Doherty, Shannon Doherty and the late Kristen Abreu. Loving great grandfather of Laila, Waylon, Rose, Isabella, Briella, and Delilah. Brother of the late Victor Abreu. Brother-in-law of Adeline Sweeney of Woburn, and Sally Pereira of Peabody. Further survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted in the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Friday, July 1st at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and visit with the family prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services will conclude with Military Honors and burial at Calvary Cemetery, Winchester. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in John's memory to the Bedford VA c/o VA Bedford Healthcare System, CDCE (135), 200 Springs Rd. Bedford, MA 01730.
