WHITON, John Richard of West Roxbury passed away peacefully in the comfort of his loving family on June 23, 2022. Beloved husband of 53 years to Marcia E. (Donahue) Whiton. Devoted father of Kristina Whiton-O’Brien and her husband the Hon. Thomas J. O’Brien of Plymouth and Dr. Adam Whiton and his wife Yolita Nugent of Brookline, cherished “Pops” of Reece Diego Nugent Whiton. He will be fondly remembered by Sarah and Joseph Sabatino and Patrick O’Brien. He was pre-deceased by his brother Robert F. Whiton. John is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. He met the love of his life in 1967 at Brigham’s Ice Cream in Mattapan Square. Together, they raised their family in the home they treasured, surrounded by the gardens they enjoyed and wonderful neighbors. A lifelong educator, John worked for the Brockton Public Schools System for over thirty years as a teacher and administrator. He was incredibly proud of his children and all their accomplishments, and the apple of his eye was his grandson, Reece. Pops and Nana lovingly taught Reece 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade and were eternally devoted to him. John was also a loyal friend and held many close relationships from his childhood. He loved listening to the radio, watching the Red Sox, reading, poetry, peanut butter, and had a passion for travel, trains, and aviation. He had an unbelievable talent of looking up into the sky at a plane and knowing the type of plane, airline, and where it was going. At his core, John enjoyed the simple things, and his favorite activity was just being together as a family. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral from the funeral home on Thursday, June 30th at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Chrysostom Church at 10 o’clock.
