Darrell Gibbs, 63, of Worcester, passed away on Monday June 20th.
He leaves behind an extensive family including his brothers, Brian Gibbs and his wife Marsha Williams, Charles Gibbs and his wife Margaret, Jerome Gibbs and his wife Susanne, and his sister, Tracy Johnson and her husband David. He also leaves behind several nieces and a nephew, Caitlin Gibbs, Megan Gibbs, Brendan Gibbs and his wife Kaitlin, Lindsay Gibbs, and Jocelyn Williams and her wife Pam Watson. Darrell also leaves behind many cousins.
Darrell was born in Buffalo, NY, son of the late Charles Stanley Gibbs, and Barbara (Lowe) Gibbs Stewart.
He graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, and earned a Bachelor’s degree at Clark University in Worcester.
He worked as a teacher at the Devereux School in Rutland for many years. Prior to Devereux, he taught at the Seven Hills Charter School in Worcester.
Darrell was a voracious reader. He consumed the works of the great literary giants, then turned his attention to philosophy and religion. Sports biographies and sports trivia were also must-reads during his life.
He was also a prolific writer. Whether it be manuscripts on education, poetry, even composing musicals, he was always putting “pen to paper” and crafting the next installment.
His dry wit humored his family and friends at countless events over the years. He also cherished his family roots, writing the history of the family that will be read for generations to come.
He also enjoyed golfing and following the triumphs and tragedies of Boston sports.
His most important contribution to our world was through his career as a teacher. Hundreds of students from middle school to young adulthood were inspired by him, learning proper English and studying great authors, while also learning that life will sometimes be hard, and not always fair.
As a practicing Buddhist, he believed in peace and kindness. May we all pause, and hope for a more kind, and peaceful, world.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday July 9th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., followed by a service at 5:00 p.m., at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA. Keeping to Buddhist tradition, red should not be used during the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darrell’s memory may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter of East Brookfield, MA.
