George B. Montague, 89 of Litchfield, NH died Tuesday June 14, 2022 at the High Pointe Hospice in Haverhill, MA. George was born in Boston, MA on August 23, 1932 a son of the late Cecil and Helen (Guppy) Montague.
Raised in East Boston, George attended St. Rose Middle and High School in Chelsea before enlisting in the United State Air Force in November of 1949. He then spent the next 22 years in service to his country until retiring as Technical Sergeant in June of 1971.
George was a proud member of the 6994th Security Squadron. This squadron is the most highly decorated squadron in the history of the current 16th Air Force – responsible for information warfare – and all its predecessor organizations. As a part of this squadron, George executed multiple tours of duty during the Vietnam War. For his outstanding service, Technical Sergeant Montague received several decorations and honors including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Upon retirement from the Air Force, George moved to Sydney, Australia and became a successful personal computer retailer. In his later years, he returned to the United States, residing in Litchfield, and spent time with oldest brother Frederick and sister-in-law Esther.
George was an avid reader, and his neighbors appreciated his vast collection of books. He was an auto enthusiast and remained up to date on the latest technology trends. Since childhood, he was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, and Australian rules football, too.
He is survived by three nephews, Curtis W. Montague of Lowell, MA, Eric W. Montague of Amesbury, MA, and Marc E. Montague of Raynham, MA, one niece, Susan E. Montague Comas of York, ME, his sister-in-law, Esther M. Montague of York, ME, four grandnieces, Leah B. Comas, Faith N. Comas, Chloe A. Montague, and Shea A. Montague. He was predeceased by three brothers, Frederick Montague, Raymond Montague, and Francis Montague, as well as his niece, Judith A. Montague.
Following cremation, calling hours were held on Monday June 27, 2022 from 5 – 6:30pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. A Catholic prayer service followed at 6:30pm. Burial with honors will be held on Friday August 26, 2022 at 11:30am at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Route 3, Boscawen, NH.
