Edna Lu Ward Dorminy, 81, of Fitzgerald, died Monday, June 13, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her family that she loved so dearly.
Memorial services will be held under the porte-cochere at Evergreen Cemetery on Thursday, June 16 at 2 PM with the Reverend Chris Ramsey presiding. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Dorminy’s home on Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Dorminy was born September 13, 1940, in Dublin, Georgia to the late Paul Edwin and Callie Sue Castleberry Ward. She was educated at Fitzgerald High School and the University of Georgia where she majored in Secondary Education. She later obtained a Master degree in School Counseling and a Specialist degree in Leadership. During her time at the University of Georgia, she served as president of the Alpha Alpha chapter of the Phi Mu Sorority.
She began her career in the Ben Hill County School System in 1962. She taught multiple grade levels, as well as held positions as School Counselor and Assistant Principal. She retired as the system’s Testing and Title I Coordinator in 2004. She was a member of the Gamma Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Fitzgerald Review Club.
She was a lifetime member of Central United Methodist Church, where she served as president and circle leader of the United Methodist Women, recording secretary of the administrative council, as well as several other roles in leadership. She was a founding member of the Covenant Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her three children, John Paul Dorminy, Suzanne Dorminy Reaves and son-in-law Todd Reaves, and Ellen Dorminy Burke and son-in-law, Mike Burke. Also surviving are four grandsons: Will Reaves, Jay Reaves, Ward Burke and Charlie Burke, all of Fitzgerald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years in 2016, Virgil W. Dorminy.
