Mrs. Margaret M. “Peg” (Lyons) Hughes, of Wayland, formerly of Andover, and beloved wife of the late R. Michael “Mike” Hughes, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022. She was 83 years old.
Born in Boston on May 12, 1939, she was the cherished daughter of the late James F. and Margaret M. (Regan) Lyons of Needham, and was a graduate of the Framingham Teachers College. A longtime resident of Andover, Peg was a Title 1 Reading teacher at several local elementary schools. She also worked for many years at the Andover Historical Society and later at the Whistler House Museum in Lowell. In their spare time, Peg and Mike loved traveling the world, especially the US National Parks. In retirement, they built a little cottage in their “happy place,” the breathtakingly scenic hamlet of Bay St. Lawrence in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. After Mike passed away in 2005, Peg enjoyed traveling to Europe with her dear friend and neighbor Pat Brown. She was a regular at the Lantern Brunch, and especially enjoyed all her friends at Washington Park.
In the role of The Best Nana Ever, Peg doted on all her grandchildren and spent many happy hours enjoying dance recitals, baseball games, football games, school plays and so many concerts! She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.
Peg is survived by her loving children: Maegan M. and her husband Thomas H. Conway of Cornville, Maine; Kathleen A. Hughes and her partner Paul Finnegan of Wayland; and Robert M. Hughes, Jr. of Webster and his longtime friend Lauren M. Carney; sister Mary L. and her husband Thomas Barten of Medfield; brothers-in-law Dale Webster of Albuquerque, NM and Paul Hesson of Jacksonville, FL; and sister-in-law Josephine Hughes of Woburn; grandchildren Erin, Ryan, Aidan, Michael, Emily and Owen and several nieces and nephews.
