Margaret Ann (Hunter) (Fairhurst) Hamm, 84, a former Nursing Home administrator, died after a brief illness on Sunday, June 5 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home. She was the widow of the late William A. Hamm and previously, the late John O. Fairhurst Jr.
Margaret was born in Brookline, MA in August 1937, one of three children of the late John R. and Margaret A. (Smith) Hunter, and raised in Brookline. She was educated in Brookline and married her first husband, John O. Fairhurst, Jr., who was serving in the United States Navy at the time, his service brought them to Virginia where she finished her education. A longtime Tewksbury resident, she was an active member of the Tewksbury United Methodist Church, and a member of the parish women’s group, the “Gen Girls” at T.U.M.C.
She also enjoyed arts and crafts and golf, having played in the Billerica Women’s League for a number of years. She was a woman of few words who would always be there for her family and will be deeply missed.
Peggy worked as the bookkeeper of Broadway Nursing Home in Methuen for over twenty five years, and later as a bookkeeper at Blaire House of Tewksbury until retirement.
She leaves five children, John O. Fairhurst III and his wife Bernice of Garner, NC, John R. “Bob” Fairhurst and his wife Lisa of Plaistow, NH, Margaret C. Donahue and her husband John of Amherst, NH, Patricia J. Polewarczyk and her husband Joseph of Hudson, NH, Penny E. Chandonnet and her husband David of Tewksbury; four step-children, Sandra Garcia and her husband Michael of Tewksbury, Lori Farell and her husband David of Nashua, NH, William E. “Billy” Hamm and his wife Marjorie of Saco, ME, Richard “Rick” Hamm and his wife Susan of Tewksbury; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; her step-grandchildren; and her step great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Hunter of R.I.; and was predeceased by her brothers, John R. Hunter, David C. Hunter, and granddaughter Christin Fairhurst.
All are welcome to attend her visitation from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9 at the Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876. On Friday June 10, you are also welcome to attend her funeral, which will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Her Funeral Service will be offered at Tewksbury United Methodist Church, 2335 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow privately at a later date.
