METHUEN – Longtime South Lawrence resident Marie Louise Aumais died at Nevins Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre on June 4, 2022, one month shy of her 94th birthday.
Born in Lawrence to Hervé Sr. and Blanche (Hugo) Aumais, Marie grew up in a tight-knit French-Canadian family where she learned to cook, play cards and sew. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1945 and was proud of her time spent working in the historic Ayer Mill as a payroll clerk. She went on to have a 40-year career at Bell Labs, later AT&T and then Lucent Technologies, where she retired as an administrative assistant to engineers.
Marie loved to travel and she touched down in Sweden, Italy, Morocco, Alaska and Africa, to name a few. Outdoor adventures were her favorite and she would hike, bike, bird-watch, ski and swim in the ocean whenever she got the chance. Friendly and outgoing, Marie was an enthusiastic competitor in everything from bridge and Kings in the Corner to golf and badminton. Adept aboard her Sail Fish, she won top trophies from the company Sailing Club from 1955-58. She was a Bell Labs mixed-league bowling champion in 1958-59. Her backyard garden produced an abundant harvest every summer and, to this day, lovely flowers – including massive white and maroon peonies – continue to blossom. Marie was an animal lover and delighted in taking her dogs Weaver, Buster Brown and Swiper for walks. Always smiling, upbeat and stylish, Marie was beloved by her many nieces and nephews. She treated them to all kinds of excursions including sleigh rides, hiking trips, beach days, berry picking, rides in her Volkswagen Bug and more. When it came to her growing family, Marie never missed a holiday, birthday party, wedding, christening or baseball championship. She owned a cottage at Long Sands Beach in York, Maine, and generously allowed her siblings and their families to visit and vacation, rain or shine. Her love of that beach and the outdoors was contagious and continues in our family to this day. Marie was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church and later attended Corpus Christi Parish, joining singing groups at both. She never said “no” to a Lawton’s hot dog, a Big Mac or a margarita.
Marie was predeceased by brothers Hervé Jr., Richard and Leon Aumais. She is survived by her sister Claire Lord of Dover, N.H.; sister-in-law Linda Aumais of South Lawrence; and many nieces, nephews and their families, who will forever hold a special place in their hearts for Aunty Marie.
Visitation will be Friday, June 10 at 9am at Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, followed by a 10:30am Mass at St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Marie’s family would like to thank Methuen Village and Nevins Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre for their extra-special care. Contributions in Marie’s name can be made to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
