Mr. Edward J. Owens, a longtime resident of Andover and beloved and devoted husband of Patricia (Dudley) Owens, went to be the Lord suddenly on May 27, 2022. He was 75 years old.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of the late William F. and Helen M. (Owens) Hoar. Mr. Owens was a US Army veteran, entering the military at Boston on March 31, 1964 and receiving his Honorable Discharge from Fort Hamilton, New York on August 3, 1965. Ed was a qualified Marksman while in the Army and attained the rank of PVT and had served in Mannheim, Germany. After leaving the Army, Ed earned his GED and graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He had been a Somerville Police Officer for seven years. After that time, he worked doing what he loved, singing in Church and praising the Lord.
Ed was an active person and always enjoyed talking to anyone. He enjoyed singing at St. Augustine Church in Andover and Mary Immaculate Nursing Center in Lawrence. Ed was a member of the choir and a Cantor for 30 years. He was very proud of his recent celebration for 45 years of sobriety. Ed also loved his cigars. He was a lifelong Green Bay Packers and Boston Bruins fan. He loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s events and traveling with Patricia. Above all, Ed was very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Besides his beloved wife, Patricia, he is survived by his loving children; Edward J. and his wife Heather A. Owens of Gorham, Maine and Barbara Lee Owens-Dewitt and her husband Jeffrey A. Smith of Gorham, Maine, daughter-in-law Pamela L. Owens of Franklin, grandchildren; Madeleine, Padraic, Grace, Aidan, Emma Patricia, Emma Joyce, Mary, Matthew and Keira, beloved brother and sister in law James and Barbara Olson of Southwick, Mass, former son-in-law of Gregory P. Dewitt and several nieces and nephews. Ed was also the loving father of the late William A. Owens and brother of the late William and Bernadette.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 4 to 7 PM. Interment will be held in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover. Per Patricia's request and in honor of Ed, please dress casually with ball caps and scally caps for Ed's services.
