Obituary

Richard J. "Butch" Coakley, Jr., 72, passed away suddenly on Friday, February 11, 2022, at his home in Cherokee, Alabama. Butch was born July 31, 1949, in Milford, Massachusetts to the late Richard J. and Doris M. (Aldrich) Coakley and resided in Medway most of his life.

Butch was the oldest of eight children and is survived by his siblings: Dennis (Marcia) Coakley of Warren, Maine; Linda (David) Baker of New Vineyard, Maine; Gail (Al) Nunes of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; Kathleen (Charles) Waldron of Medway, Massachusetts; Neil (Kerstin) Coakley of Bellingham, Massachusetts; Timothy (Susan) Coakley of Moultonborough, New Hampshire; and Kevin Coakley of Medway, Massachusetts; as well as 13 nieces and nephews and 5 great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several close friends from Massachusetts as well as Alabama, Florida, and California.

Growing up, Butch loved horses and pick-up trucks. From the age of 12 he spent many weekends at horse shows and competitions. By the age of 16 he owned his own horse. He bought his first Chevy pick-up before he graduated from high school. Many hours were spent tinkering (oftentimes doing major repairs) on his 1942 Ford pick-up and his 1957 Chevy pick-up. He was a self-taught mechanic.

Butch graduated from Medway High School in 1967 and resided in Medway until moving to Alabama in 2014. He was a member of the Teamsters Union #170 until his retirement in 1992.

Butch thoroughly enjoyed his nieces and nephews. He was a hard worker. He was generous with his time, talents, and treasure, and was always reaching out to help others. He enjoyed traveling and visited Thailand many times with friends. He enjoyed cooking, especially the Thai food that he was introduced to while in Thailand. He also enjoyed farming, fishing, and camping.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday June 4, at 12:00 PM at the Ginley-Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber Street in Medway (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com), followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
