John M. “Jack” Weiss, of Wayland and formerly of Easton, CT, was born in Allentown, PA, on October 17, 1936, and died peacefully on May 27, 2022.
Jack moved to Fairfield, and attended Fairfield Preparatory School. He grew up alongside his three beloved sisters, Mary Leah, Patricia, and Joanne. Upon graduation from Fairfield Prep, Jack went on to Fairfield University, where he received a degree in mathematics along with a commission in the U.S. Navy. Jack then served as a legal-affairs officer on the aircraft carrier USS Antietam for three years. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Jack returned to Fairfield where he married the love of his life, Sally Rudis, with whom he enjoyed 61 years of happy marriage.
Jack and Sally moved to West Hartford, where Jack began his career at IBM, rising to the level of director. During this time, Jack and Sally welcomed their two children, John, and Sarah. Eventually, the family settled in Wayland, MA, where Jack and Sally made many wonderful friends with whom they shared celebrations, ski trips, basketball games, and parties on Highland Circle.
Jack was an avid golfer from a relatively young age and enjoyed playing and watching golf at every opportunity. He and Sally developed an extensive group of golfing friends at the Weston, MA Golf Club. A devout Catholic with deep Jesuit grounding, Jack loved helping to organize the annual John Pope the 23rd Golf Tournament.
Jack took an early retirement from IBM to enjoy more time with his family, and eventually with his grandchildren – Maddie, Nick, and Annie Auerbach, and Abby Weiss. Jack especially loved spending time with his extended family on Cape Cod – flying kites, barbecuing, and watching the 4th of July fireworks.
During retirement, Jack wrote several books including "We Served" -- a compilation of several first-hand accounts from veterans across multiple branches of the armed forces. Jack sent the book to all living U.S. presidents, and received a personalized note from George H.W. Bush, thanking Jack for this important work.
Jack lived his principles and was a mentor to many. Personally, and professionally, Jack was eager to lend a hand, a hug, and a supporting word. He was a gentleman who led by example, laughing deeply, and giving at every turn. Jack loved greatly and was greatly loved by his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitations will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road Wayland, MA.
