Peter Arthur, age 92, of Brockton died on Sunday May 22 after a brief illness. He was 6 days shy of his 93rd birthday. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Thimi and Amelia (Getchka) Arthur (formerly of Albania), brother to the late Sylvia Gentile of Marshfield and brother to Tom Arthur of Sydney Australia and his wife Sandra.
He attended Brockton Public schools and was a 1947 graduate. Peter enjoyed and played many sports as a young man both in school and in city leagues. He was also a big New England sports fan and enjoyed watching all the games with much enthusiasm.
Peter’s work career started as a young man sweeping the factory floors at Brockton Foot-Joy. His 51-year career there spanned across many areas of the shoe manufacturing business. He learned each aspect of the art of making shoes as he took on many roles within the company and ended his career as Vice President of Operations and Manufacturing. He was one of the pioneers in the establishment of high-quality shoe manufacturing in Taiwan and China. He set up state of the art production facilities along with training of highly skilled workforce. He made many friends along the way and even learned to speak a bit of Mandarin.
Peter was a family oriented, charismatic, gregarious and a charming man. He was outgoing and generous and often the life of the party. Dancing was his biggest passion and he always had the ladies lining up on the dance floor. A scratch golfer in his day, he made a hole in one on July 19, 1956. In addition to golf, he enjoyed reading, listening to jazz, going to yard sales and collecting antiques. Most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Peter is survived by his children Emelia Arthur, Elaine (Arthur) LeBoeuf both of Raynham, Robert Arthur and his wife Kathleen of Plymouth, Janelle Arthur and her husband Steve Torchio of Durham, NC., his 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his life-long friend & “bromance”, Joe Ferrini, his wife Jackie and their children and extended families who were a “second” family to him.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Peter’s family on Wednesday June 1, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St. Brockton. Peter’s funeral service will be held on Thursday June 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Melrose Cemetery in Brockton.
