W. Gene McMahan, 93, of Anderson, passed away May 24, 2022 at Community Hospital in Anderson.
He was born July 16, 1928 in Waynetown, IN, the son of Clarence and Lois (Keup) McMahan. He graduated with honors from Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering and received his master’s in business degree from Ball State University.
He was employed as an executive leader and engineer with Guide Lamp Division of General Motors for 41 years, retiring in 1991. Gene was a 70+ year member of Noble Street/New Horizons United Methodist Church where he was active in many leadership positions and teaching roles. He was a 54 year member of the Boy Scouts of America. All three of his sons and his grandson achieved Eagle Scout and Gene received lifetime achievement honors from Scouting.
He was an active member of the Anderson YMCA for over 50 years, including two years as chairman of the board. He was an avid reader throughout his life and took up playing the organ in his later years at Lambert’s Music Center. He also belonged to the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Fellowship Masonic Lodge, and the Purdue Alumni Association.
He served as captain of the US Army Reserves 316th chemical company for 13 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris (Olek) McMahan; four children, Steven (Lynne) McMahan, Debra Clear, Douglas (Karen) McMahan, Daniel (Jennifer) McMahan; grandchildren; Melissa, Amanda, Emily, Alex, Katherine, Danielle, Ashlynn, Amber; great grandchildren, Clara, Wyatt, Jack, Evan, Jillian; stepchildren, Bran McFarland, Stacy Hutton, Doug McFarland, Jim McCampbell, Ann Eldridge, Holly Miller; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis (McDaniel) McMahan and his second wife, Lou Iris (Parmer) McMahan.
Gene will always be remembered for his love of Christ, his love of family, and the many lives he touched over the years. He strove to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 12 Noon at New Horizons United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 30, 2022 from 3-7 PM at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service and also one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday at the church.
