Than Rean, 85 of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at his home surrounded by his large and loving family. He was the beloved husband of Chhean Chhoeun with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage.
He was born in Battambang, Cambodia on July 5, 1936 and was a son of the late Tharean and Nhem. He was raised in Cambodia, where he was educated and worked as a farmer. In 1984, he bravely escaped the Khmer Rouge, relocating with his family to the United States in search of a better life. They settled in Lowell in 1986, where they made their home and raised their family.
Than was a devoted Christian and was a former member of the Eliot Church in Lowell for many years before becoming a member of the 5th Street Baptist Church. He was a gifted musician and participated as a drummer and also a Pastor within his church community.
In addition to his wife, Chhean Chhoeun of Lowell, he is survived by his children, Channa Than of Lowell, Chhun Than of S. Berwick, ME, Rem Than of Lowell, Sen Than of Lowell, Rothda Than of Lowell, Ravy Than of Lowell, Raveth Than of Lowell, the late Kon Than of Lynn, Yath Than of Lynn, Yeth Than of Lynn, Chheuy Than of Lowell, and Chheath Than of Lowell. He also leaves behind his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other extended family and friends in the United States and Cambodia.
On Saturday, May 28, 2022 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 9 a.m. - 12 noon at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 978-458-6816.
His funeral ceremony will begin at 12 noon followed by procession for burial at Westlawn II Cemetery on Boston Road in Lowell.
