Daniel P. McCabe, 65, of Worcester died Monday, May 9th at home. He leaves his mother, Barbara (Turner) McCabe Spadea of Auburn; his children, Kevin R. McCabe and his wife, Elizabeth of Cary, NC, Brianne D. Downing and her husband, Brett of Sturbridge, and Andrew J. McCabe of Worcester; three brothers, James McCabe and his wife, Susan of Auburn, Thomas McCabe and his wife, Judith of Worcester, and Matthew McCabe and his wife, Michelle of Charlton; four sisters, Donna McCabe of Worcester, Kerry Schnorf and her husband, David of Springfield, Paula Courtney Pierce and her husband, Paul of Spencer, and Margaret Davin and her husband, John of Medway; five grandchildren, Kaylianna, Daniel, Avalynne, Laiella, and Rosalyn; and many nieces and nephews.
He was born in Worcester the son of the late Paul McCabe. Daniel lived for most of his life in the Columbus Park neighborhood of Worcester, and eventually settled in down the street from his childhood home. Daniel graduated from Worcester Boys Trade in 1975 with a focus in sheet metal fabrication. He applied this specialty while he worked at William F. Lynch for the past 42 years as an HVAC contractor and Project Manager. Daniel was a veteran of the United States Marines Corps, stationed in Camp Fuji, Japan. During his time in Japan, he made many lifelong friends and met the mother of his children, Tomoko (Nakashima) Roberts.
In his time away from Worcester, Daniel raised his children in the town of Gardner, MA. While in Gardner, Daniel was heavily involved in all his children’s activities and organizations. He was President/Coach in Gardner Youth Soccer for many years, building it through the 1980’s and 1990’s. With the support of the Gardner Youth Soccer League, he was instrumental in bringing soccer programs to the Junior High and High School. Daniel was also the President/Coach of the Gardner Little League from t-ball to all-stars throughout his children’s careers. Daniel also was Cubmaster of Gardner Cub Scouts. If his children were involved in a pastime, Daniel was all in.
This love of sports and family led to one of Daniel’s favorite past times, watching his grandchildren play their many sports and dance. From football to softball and all in between, you could often see him cheer from the sidelines, and on occasion he joined in the dance.
Another form of enjoyment was spending his time with family and friends at Hampton Beach and the annual Hampton family golf tournament. He was a member of golf leagues in Gardner, Worcester and Thompson, CT. He was also a longtime member of Last Cast Anglers fishing club. He could often be seen out on the water all year round.
His funeral is Saturday, May 14th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding Street.
