Obituary

Diamantina (Ferreira) Gomes, 85 of Lowell, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday, April 28, 2022 with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of Manuel Gomes with whom she would of shared their 58th wedding anniversary together this summer.

She was born on August 2, 1936 in Terceira, Azores, Portugal and was a daughter of the late Joao Pacheco Ferreira and the late Maria Jesus (Rocha) Ferreira. She was raised in Terceira where she took care of her family and household.

On October 31, 1980, Diamantina relocated to the United States to provide her family a better life and opportunities, settling in Lowell. She resided in the Back Central Street neighborhood, where she made her lifelong home. She was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. She was employed at Carroll Shoe for 15 years before they closed and then at Empire Linen before illness forced her retirement.Diamantina loved cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Margarida Cunha and her longtime companion, Jason Greenaway of Lowell, Joao Gomes and his wife, Anabela of Terceira, Azores, Portugal, Ana P. Gomes and her longtime companion, Paul Machado of Lowell, Jorge Gomes of Lowell, and Nelia Gomes of Dracut.

She also leaves behind her 7 grandchildren, Michael Cunha, Felicia Gomes, JJ Gomes, Karson and Konnor Boule, Leonardo Matos, Lisandro Gomes, and her great grandchildren, Dianyliz, Gabriella, Milani and Penelope.

She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, including Carla, Alvaro and his wife, Sonia, Paul and Joao Nelson; and many other members of her family both here in the United States and in Portugal.

She was also the sister of the late Nair Toste, the late Grimaneza Ferreira; sister in law of the late Henrique Rocha, the late Lucia Ferreira, and the late Alvaro Goncalves.

On Wednesday, May 4, 2022 all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 4-8 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 978-458-6816. Her funeral will begin at the funeral home on Thursday, May 5 at 9 a.m. followed by her funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Church in Lowell. Procession will follow for burial at St. Patrick Cemetery.
