North Baldwin - Tonja Alma (Tommila) Evans, age 76, passed on to be with our Lord and Savior on April 22, 2022, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME, after years of declining health.
She was born in Norfolk, VA, on July 13, 1945, a daughter of the late Toivo J and Pauline A (Breau) Tommila of West Townsend, MA.
After attending North Middlesex Regional High School, Tonja began raising a family in West Townsend, MA, before moving to Lancaster, NH, where her family grew. In later years she moved to Maine, ultimately settling down in North Baldwin with her husband, Gerald (Jerry) Evans.
Tonja loved greatly and family meant the world to her. In days of better health, she enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, and taking care of others. In times of decline, she liked visiting on the phone with loved ones and watching home décor and remodel programs, envisioning what she’d like to do in her own home. Throughout all, she wanted her love for the Lord and trust in His will to be evident so that others might be encouraged in their own faith.
Tonja is survived by her devoted husband Gerald R Evans; her seven children: Pamela A (McMahon) St. Germain and her husband Michael of Hooksett, NH; Shon McMahon of Dalton, NH; Rebecca L (McMahon) Matthews and her husband Chris of Whitefield, NH; Michael K Walker of Warrenton, OR; Stephanie H (Walker) Glidden and her husband Ryan of Whitefield, NH; Daniel T Walker and his wife Jill of Sandown, NH; and Jason J Walker of Littleton, NH; her five step-children: April Evans of Norway, ME; Merle Evans of Greenwood, ME; Kristoffer Evans and his wife Carla of Greenwood, ME; Joshua Evans of Greenwood, ME; and Jennifer (Evans) Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC; her brother Peter Tommila and his wife Vianey of Worcester, MA; and sister Marsha (Tommila) Mills of Rindge NH. Her legacy includes 24 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren as well as numerous treasured nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Tonja was predeceased by a grandchild.
At Tonja’s request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
It is requested that any donations be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME. The love, care, attention, and respect everyone there, staff and volunteers alike, showed Tonja and her family during this difficult time was remarkable.
