Steve Carter, 55, of Irwinville, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Memorial Health in Savannah, Georgia.
Graveside services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Big Creek Cemetery, in Irwin County, Georgia, with the Rev. David Barton and the Rev. Chris Dorrity officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM, at the funeral home in Ocilla, Georgia.
Mr. Carter was born February 5, 1967, in Albany, Georgia, to Patricia C. Owens and the late Rufus Ellis Carter. He graduated from Irwin County High School in 1985 and later attended Albany State University, where he kept stats for the athletic teams. Steve earned his Associate’s degree in Journalism. Mr. Carter worked as a sports writer for most of his career with articles appearing in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Macon Telegraph, the Ocilla Star and various other publications throughout the state and nation. His greatest loves were his family and sports. He worked as the sports editor for the Tifton Gazette before his health made him retire. He was currently the statistician for the Irwin County Indians. He was happiest under those Friday night lights and was passionate when writing about kids. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Braves, and the Georgia Bulldogs. He enjoyed photographing sunsets, going to the movies, chatting with his Facebook friends, visiting Disney World and his extended family in Texas, and especially a hot chicken box from Chicken Delite. Steve was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his parents, Patricia & Herman Owens of Irwinville; a sister, Stephanie McKee of Tifton; a step-sister, Sherry AhSam & Paul of Kapoley, Hawaii; a step-brother, Herman Owens, Jr. & Donna of Harrells, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews: Tripp McKee, Carter McKee, Kyra Talisoa, Krissy Arline, P.J. AhSam, Greg AhSam, Will Owens and Trey Owens. He was preceded in death by his father, Rufus E. Carter.
