SOUTH PORTLAND- Susan Katherine MacNichol, 84, died peacefully on Monday, April 11th, 2022 in South Portland,
Maine.
Susan MacNichol was born on December 6th, 1937 to Genevieve Roche and Alexander A.
MacNichol, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick which she always claimed gave her dual citizenship
so she could leave at any time she wanted. She had four children with Eugene Sprinkle of
Fulton, TX: Genevieve Sprinkle, Patricia Sprinkle, Gale Sprinkle-Tousignant and Jed Sprinkle.
Sue was a mother, grandmother, friend, teacher, librarian, caretaker, radio host, witch and artist.
She liked to create works reclaiming bits of colored glass and things from the seashore to make
pieces both beautiful and useful. Her work in libraries was the cornerstone of a lifelong love
affair with books and a strong commitment to public education.
Although raised as a Catholic, she was always interested in other faiths. She later gravitated
towards Goddess religion, and studied to become a High Priestess in the MacFarland Dianic
Tradition. Through her work teaching, her stewardship of libraries and her feminist community;
she was a mentor and guide to many. Sue’s encyclopedic wisdom, candid advice and roguish
sense of humor will be sorely missed.
Sue traveled far and wide throughout her life; living in Maine, Germany, California, Texas and
Massachusetts. Her early years in postwar Germany were fundamentally formative in how she
perceived the world. She learned to speak German through her friendship with other children,
and she saw through those friendships what war can do to a people. Through all of her travels,
she maintained a deep connection to Eastport, ME. Sue returned there in the final years of her
life; walking the trails, working part time at the library and directing the summer reading
program. She could be found every Sunday morning reading the paper cover to cover and
participating in lively conversations over breakfast at the WaCo Diner. Sue always said she was
so glad to come home to Eastport.
There will be a memorial honoring Sue’s life on Saturday, June 11th, 2022 at the Eastport Arts
Center
