Mary Ann (Monteiro) Ames, 88, of New Bedford died peacefully on April 11, 2022, surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late Manuel R. and Constance (Baptista) Monteiro and had lived in New Bedford and Fairhaven during her life.
Mary was a 1951 graduate of Fairhaven High School, where she played varsity basketball all four years.
She retired in June 1982 after 32 years of service as a Case Coordinator at the New Bedford District Court Probation Office.
Mary loved spending time with her family and especially cherished time with her great-great nieces, Jayell and Ella Rose. She was an ardent sports fan who rarely missed watching a Red Sox, Celtics, or Patriots game. For many years, Mary enjoyed boating to Martha's Vineyard, Newport, and Florida. She also greatly enjoyed driving her vintage Mustang and her 1968 Thunderbird Landau, which represented her ultimate "coolness".
Survivors include her sister, Betty Ann Fermino, of New Bedford; her brother, Joseph "Billy" Monteiro and his wife, Margie, of Somerset; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Evelyn Almeida, Alice Leighton, Pauline Cardoza, Marion Barrows, and Arthur, Edward, Adolph, George and Robert Monteiro.
Per Mary's wishes, no public services will be held and she will be interred privately at St. John's Cemetery. For online guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
