Ruth J. (Maxson) Cobis, 84 of Whitman, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on Monday, April 11 with her five children by her side.
Born in Iowa in 1938, she was the fifth child of the late Frank J. Maxson and Sadie E. (McKinnon) Maxson. She was raised on an Iowa farm and loved country living. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School and at the young age of 18 ventured out to Boston to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a registered nurse.
She was a graduate of the Quincy School of Nursing and a proud pinned Registered Nurse. She spent the beginning years of her nursing career working as an emergency room nurse at Brockton Hospital and South Shore Hospital, and the latter part of her career in the Emergency Room at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, MA where she retired, bringing to completion her 55 years of emergency room nursing. In addition to working as an emergency room nurse, she worked for an agency caring for disabled children.
She was a member of South Shore Baptist Church in Hingham where she volunteered for the Stephens Ministry providing one-on-one care to children with medical disabilities and was on the prayer team. She loved studying the Bible, gardening, cooking for others, walks on the beach, collecting sea glass and seashells, sunrises and sunsets, all things of nature, walks in the woods collecting all sorts of natural treasures, she loved to spend time with family and friends, especially time spent privately with each one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Anyone who came into contact with Ruthie would experience the love she had in her heart for everyone and everything. Many people who knew her would say that she wore rose-colored glasses; she chose to see the good in everyone and everything.
She was predeceased by her baby daughter “Little” Linda. She is survived by her children and their spouses Frank Cobis and, his wife Christine of Rockland, MA, Gary Cobis, his wife Brenda of Gilford, NH, Ann (Cobis) Kailher, her husband Marc of Whitman, MA, Julie (Cobis) Turner, her husband Matthew of Whitman, MA, and John Cobis, Jr., his wife Aimee of Hanson, MA, her loving eleven grandchildren, Melinda (& husband Michael), Justin (& wife Becky), Jessica, Jillian, Nathan, Zachary (& wife Jade), Tucker, Joshua, Benjamin, Chloe, and Ainsleigh, great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Charlotte, Camden and Maxson, her brother Gary Maxson of Florida, and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and coworkers.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 18 at Blanchard’s Funeral Chapel, 666 Plymouth Street (Rte.58 @ the rotary) Whitman, MA 02382. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19 at South Shore Baptist Church, 578 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043 followed by the burial at Colebrook Cemetery, 45 Essex Street, Whitman, MA.

Recipients of this educational scholarship will be chosen annually based on their character, compassion, community involvement, and their desire to be a caring and compassionate nurse; similar to how Ruthie exemplified her nursing career.
