Dorothy A. (Sullivan) Brophy, 88, of Worcester, formerly of Somerville, died very peacefully on Sunday, April 10th in UMass Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Neil F. Brophy died in 1994. She is survived by three sons, Mark T. Brophy and his wife, Margaret of Barre, Matthew G. and Paul A. Brophy, both of Worcester; two daughters, Eileen N. Dodd and her husband, Robert of Winter Park, FL and Marianne Siener and her husband, George of Fitchburg; five grandchildren, Maria, Justin and Catherine Brophy and Matthew and Michael Dodd; She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas R. and Robert J. Sullivan; her sister, Mildred F. Conlon and her stepfather, Charles Rumney.
Dorothy was born and raised in Somerville, the daughter of Thomas J. and Nora (Dedrick) Sullivan and graduated from Somerville Hospital School of Nursing and served as a Registered Nurse in the United States Navy Nurses Corps. Dorothy then went on to graduate from Worcester State College with a B.A in Psychology and a M.A in Counseling. Her dedication to caring for others as a nurse continued as she later worked at the former Rutland Heights VA Hospital, Fairlawn Hospital, WPI as well as working as a private duty nurse, retiring from UMass-Memorial Hospital in 1994. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, a former member of the Board of Directors of UMass Medical Center Retirees Association, and the Psychology Honors Society. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren whom she was extremely proud of.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of UMass-Memorial's 3rd Floor South and to Dr. Henry Del Rosario for the outstanding care, comfort and compassion provided to Dorothy during her stay.
