James J. Niland, 90

Dateline: Norton, MA

James J. Niland, age 90, of Norton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at the Hope Health Hospice Center in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Diane C. (Hilferty) Niland, whom he met while ballroom dancing at Mosley’s on the Charles in Dedham.

Born in Woburn, MA on March 23, 1932, he was a loving son of the late James and Catherine (McElhinney) Niland.

Jim grew up and was educated in Winchester. During the Korean War, he proudly and honorably served his country for two years in the United States Army. He had made his home in Norton for the past twenty-two years and prior to retiring had been employed for twenty-five years as a Lineman for the former New England Telephone Company.

Jim’s family and friends were the essence of his life, along with his true patriotic spirit and involvement with numerous veteran’s organizations in the Quincy area. He enjoyed singing, bird watching, reading and in later fan watching the golf fan and being a big fan of the Boston Red Sox.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children: Linda McCabe and her significant other Alfred Bregnard of Mansfield, Judith O’Rourke and her husband Richard of Norton and Glenn Morgan of California City, California. He was the cherished grandfather of Kevin McCabe, Kelly McCabe and her fiancé Brian Alexander, Jason O’Rourke and his wife Mona, Shannon O’Rourke and her boyfriend Craig Boure and the late Ryan O’Rourke, who recently passed away on November 23, 2021. He was the dear brother of Edward Niland and his wife Dolly of Marco Island, Florida, the late Janice and Phyllis and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, April 5th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 11:30 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home. Burial, along with military honors, will follow at 1:45 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Due to the limitation of flowers allowed at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Jame’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Hope Health Hospice Center, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02903.
