STANDISH – Penelope A. Burnell “Penny,” age 70, passed away peacefully on March 21 at Gosnell Memorial House in Scarborough, ME, with her husband and daughters by her side.
She was born in Westbrook on Sept. 14, 1951, the daughter of the late Philip and Faye (Johnson) Maye, and graduated from Westbrook Schools, where she played the flute in the high school marching band.
Penny will always be remembered for the enjoyment she had reading, caring for her home, and plants; however, her love of family and especially her daughters and grandchildren, were most important to her. She truly enjoyed spending her time at their sporting events, including softball, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, wrestling, football, baseball, golf, and motocross racing. There was nothing more important than her children and grandchildren. Penny also enjoyed camp and boating on Sebago Lake and the ocean, going for rides, and seeing deer and native wildlife in her yard.
Both Penny and her husband Bruce owned and operated a pet products business called BRUCE Enterprises. Penny was the salesperson with clients in Maine and New Hampshire.
Penny and Bruce were active in the Maine Bird Dog Club. She would help at field trials and opened her home for meetings and field trial drawings. She used to accompany Bruce all over New England and New Brunswick when he would enter his bird dogs.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years – Bruce Burnell; children – Lisa Woodsum and her husband Nic of Gorham and Devon Nadeau and her husband Nick of Benton; her grandchildren – Wyatt Woodsum and Colby and Conner Nadeau; a brother – Ronald Maye and his wife Martha of Hudson, NH and a niece Stephanie Mazerolle, nephews Christopher and Kyle Maye; and aunts – Ruth Webster of Gorham and Alice Maye-Davies of Australia.
A graveside service will be held for family and friends on Friday, May 13th at 4 PM at Dow’s Corner Cemetery, Cape Road, Standish. A reception will be held immediately following the service, with the location to be announced in the week to come.
A reception will be held following the service (5:15 PM) at Moody's (200 Narragansett Street (US Rt. 202) Gorham, ME).
