Obituary

Weir, Michael J.- Retired Dedham Police Chief, March 22, 2022

Beloved husband of Jean M. (Connolly) Weir for 48 years, devoted father of Keriann M. (Weir) Dorn and her husband Matthew Dorn of Duxbury, and loving Bampa of Madison and Michael Dorn. Brother of Paul Weir of Dedham, Paula Olson of Norwood, Donna Guastalli of Venice, Florida, and the late William, John, Joseph, and Kenny Weir, and Penny Smith. Also, survived by several brothers in-law, sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Chief Mike Weir was born in Dedham and lived, grew up, and raised his family in East Dedham most of his life. He knew what it was like to grow up in tough times and learned in his early days that helping people was the way to go. He was one of nine children and both of his parents died at the early ages of 51 and 57.

Mike married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Connolly, in 1974 and was blessed with one daughter Keriann in 1980. He loved his role as husband and father but nothing beat the role of becoming a “Bampa” to Madison and Michael in 2012. They were his pride and joy and he was absolutely adored by them.

While attending Dedham High School, Chief Weir was an outstanding athlete who was highly respected, excelling in baseball and basketball. He was a true gentleman both on and off the field. He graduated from Dedham High School in 1968 and in 1970 enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training in South Carolina and was honorably discharged in 1972. After his return, he took the police exam and was appointed to the Dedham Police Department in 1972. During his career, Mike attained the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and eventually became Chief in 2006. He was a Cops’ Chief and a Peoples’ Chief. He was well respected by every officer on the force. He was popular with the youth of the community and loved by all the seniors in town.

After retirement, he continued to give by joining the Board of Directors for Cops for Kids with Cancer. He enjoyed spending summers down the Cape in Brewster with his family, golfing every chance he could, and loved attending sporting events for his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 18, Norwood Elks, Dedham Knights of Columbus, and the Dedham Moose Lodge.

Mike lived his life by the mantra, ’It’s nice to be important but more important to be nice”. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
