SOUTH HADLEY – Robert F. “Shaggy” Chagnon, 86, of South Hadley and a former longtime resident of Ingham Street in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. He passed into Eternal Life at Holyoke Medical Center surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Barre, Vermont on February 19, 1936, a beloved son of the late Oscar and Eva (Choquette) Chagnon. He was raised in Holyoke, graduated from Holyoke Trade High School and was a resident of Chicopee since 1968 before moving to South Hadley in 2018. He served his country in the United States Army in the Third Armored Division attached to the 11th Airborne Division and attained the rank of Private First Class. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 336 and was employed as a Drywall Installer for the A.E. Jodoin, Jr., Inc. Drywall Contractors in Chicopee and for Johnson Acoustics, Inc. in West Springfield and retired in 1995. He was a member of the Tiger’s Athletic Club and the Fairview Knights of Columbus Council 4044 where he was an active member and volunteer at the weekly bingo and delivering meals at Thanksgiving. He was a former communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee and currently a communicant of Saint Patrick Church in South Hadley. During his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing and bowling, but most especially loved spending time supporting his grandchildren’s activities. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Janet A. (Aubuchon) Chagnon. They were married on April 22, 1961 at the former Precious Blood Church in Holyoke and were blessed with over 60 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving daughter, Keri Chagnon-Donze and her husband, Joseph Donze, of South Hadley; his three cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Tayler, Jillian, and Nathan Donze; his daughter, Kim Cook and her daughters, Suzette Thompson and her two sons, Paul and Silas, June Cook, and Jennifer Sonnenberg; his dear brother in law, Gerald Aubuchon and his wife, Maryann of Chicopee; his two dear sisters in law, June Aubuchon of Brunswick, GA, and Gladys Nartowicz of South Deerfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and numerous friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son, Mark Chagnon; his loving daughter, Kristi Chagnon; his dear brother, Gerald Chagnon and his wife, Irene; and his dear brother in law, Thomas Nartowicz. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01101. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to his Mass. The funeral home parking lot is located in the rear.
