Eugene J. Fournier, 87

Eugene J. “Gene” Fournier, age 87, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 17, 2022 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Michelina C. “Mickey” (Morini) Fournier, to whom he was wed on October 12, 1956.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on June 10, 1934, he was a loving son of the late Philippe and Angelina (Caron) Fournier.
Gene grew up in town and along with his wife, was a 1952 graduate of Mansfield High School. During the time of the Korean Conflict, he honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army and later in life, earned an Associate Degree in Business from Newbury College.
Gene’s family was his most treasured gift in life and throughout the years he worked ever-so-hard to support them. Prior to retiring, he was employed for thirty years in various positions at the Foxboro Company and retired as a Supervisor of Order Entry. Following retirement, Gene worked for seventeen years at the Bay State Envelope Company in Mansfield and was also well known as a painter and wall paperer.
An active communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield, where he formerly served as a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 14, as a Committee Chairman for Cub Scout Pack 7 and Gene was a recipient of the Pelican Award in recognition of his devotion to scouting.
While employed at the Foxboro Company, Gene was a member of the Jolly Fox Camping Club and the Men’s Softball League, where he was affectionately known as “Papa Geno” and had the distinction of proudly pitching a 1-Hitter. Following retirement, he was a member of the Foxboro Company Golf League for many years and in his history of golfing, once shot a hole-in-one.
A lifelong New England sports fan, Gene enjoyed coaching Mansfield Little League while his children were growing up. Along with his wife Mickey, they volunteered their assistance for many years for the Pan Mass Challenge and also at the Mass Arts Center, (formerly MMAS).
In later years, at his winter home in Kings Gate Club, Nokomis, Florida, Gene became an extremely talented woodworker and generously donated his pieces of Arts to many charities. He will always be remembered for his passion of gardening, the pristine manner in which he kept his lawn and at the time of his death, was eagerly anticipating the birth of his fourth great grandchild.
The Fournier family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, especially Dr. Michael Leukam, the staff at Sturdy Memorial Hospital and Dr. John Adams, Dr. Charles Chen and Dr. Raymond Paul-Blanc for all their care and devotion to Gene.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his devoted children: Allan Fournier and his wife Margaret “Mickey” of North Attleboro, Michael Fournier and his husband David of Cranston, RI, Denise Monroe of Hampton, NH, Glenn Fournier of Mansfield, David Fournier and his wife Coleen Shade of Nevada City, CA and Lori Johnson and her husband Brian of Mansfield. He was the cherished Pepere of Tara Stabile and her husband Greg, Brad Monroe and his wife Jade, Marie Fournier and her fiancé Joey, Larissa Angelocci, Sarah Angelocci, Adam Johnson and to his great grandchildren of Jackson and Meredith Stabile and Samson Mack-Angelocci. He was the dear brother of the late Phillip Fournier and his late wife Winifred, Theresa Guimond and her late husband Harvey, Ernest Fournier, who is survived by his wife Claire of Mansfield and Sister Mary Gloria. He was the special brother-in-law of Elena Goddard and her late husband Raymond and Mario Morini and his wife Sandra. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, March 20th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 21st at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial with military honors will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
Gene’s family would prefer that those attending his services to please wear a facial covering.
