Mary A. Smallwood, age 87, of South Easton, passed away on February 26, 2022. She was the wife of Charles T. Smallwood, Jr. MD.
Born in Newton, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Angela (Sofia) McLaren.
Mary graduated from Medford High School in 1952. She received a BA degree from UMASS Lowell in 1956 and MA degree from TUFTS in 1960. Mary was a 3rd Grade teacher for the Medford School Department from 1956-1965. She married Charles T. Smallwood Jr. MD in 1963. They lived in Malden, then Brockton and eventually settled in Easton where they have resided since 1974. She was a dedicated 25-year volunteer for Old Colony Hospice. As a a member of the Women’s Guild at Brockton Hospital she chaired a committee that gathered recipes and published a cookbook. She also was a member of The Women’s Guild at Cardinal Cushing General Hospital from 1965-1999.
Mrs. Smallwood was a loving and caring person who was generous and kind. She had a deep appreciation for classical music and was a subscriber to Boston Symphony Orchestra for many years.
In addition to her husband, she leaves her daughter Julia A. Wheatley of North Attleboro; three grandchildren, John C. Wheatley, Emily S. Wheatley, and Cullen M. Smallwood. She was the mother of the late David C. Smallwood and sister of the late John J McLaren, MD and Aunt to many beloved nieces and nephews.
A private burial and memorial mass at Holy Cross Parish in South Easton will be held at a later date.
