BALDWIN - Bruce H. Doughty, 64, of Baldwin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Bruce was working on his off-grid camp in November with his kids - He wasn’t going to let cancer take away his love of the outdoors and working on projects.
Bruce was born in Portland on February 15, 1958, a son of Fred and Martha Doughty. Bruce grew up in Baldwin and attended Sacopee Valley High School. As a youngster, Bruce would ride motorbikes with his siblings and the neighborhood kids. He had a mischievous side that you could tell from his eyes and smile, but always with good intentions. He loved riding motorcycles and he owned a Harley 1935 for over 40 years. Bruce was skilled in both mechanical and construction trades and enjoyed fixing up discarded computers and donating them to local families and libraries. Bruce was a man of great character who was happy to share a story or help troubleshoot. Aside from working on motorcycles, Bruce logged his own property, built the house in which he raised his family, helped others build or fix their houses, and took his kids fishing or for walks in the woods.
When he started building the off-grid camp in Sebago in 2012, he experimented with growing garlic, and was convinced that garlic is what made him become a gardener. Each year he would make adjustments to the soil, rotate crops, try new seed varieties, and just have fun watching things grow. The harvest of 2021 included beans, peas, squash, cukes, zucchini, asparagus, chard, kale, carrots, onions, potatoes, flowers, herbs and about 900 bulbs of garlic. Growing, cooking, and sharing healthy food was an extension of his love for nature and his family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Martha Doughty of Baldwin; his daughters, Alanna Yannelli and husband Jason of Sebago and Alice Doughty of Bradford; his son, Nathan Doughty and wife Sasha of Livingston, Montana; his five granddaughters (Olivia, Willow, Aspen, Lola and Freya); his brother, Fred Doughty and wife Jocelyn of Baldwin; his sister, Brenda Reinsborough and husband Butch of Pownal; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the community for their support and favorite memories of Bruce and to the Gosnell House for their care and kindness toward the family.
There will be a family gathering at a later date. In his memory, plant a seed, try and fix something, and share your skills with the next generation.
