Richard Leon Velasco, 76, passed on March 25 th , 2016 at Ventura Community Memorial
Hospital. Family members were present at the time of his passing.
Gloria Marie Velasco, 81, passed on February 26, 2022 in the comfort of her home with family at
her bedside.
Richard was Gloria’s beloved husband and best friend; they met when she was four years old
and he was seven. They married on June 30 th , 1972 and resided in Ventura, California. Gloria
was the historian of the family and a descendant of Ensign Lt. Jose Joaquin Moraga, who was
the second- in-command of the de Anza Expedition. Richard was a retired mechanic and
business owner (Budget Service Center). Gloria was a retired Occupational Health and Safety
Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Defense at Point Mugu Naval Base. Richard and Gloria
were inseparable; they enjoyed antique shopping, which they affectionately called going
snooping, were devoted movie buffs, and adored their beloved pets, Chiquita Reina and Charlie
Whiskers.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Service to be held at the BOYKO &
REARDON TELEGRAPH ROAD MORTUARY & CREMATION, 15 Teloma Drive, Ventura, Saturday

Gloria Marie Velasco, the only child of Leonardo Celestino Real and Velia Marie Flores, was born on February 15, 1941, in Santa Paula, California and was called to heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on February 26, 2022. Her beloved husband, Richard Leon Velasco, preceded her in death and it was their desire to have a Celebration of Life for them at the same time. He was her best friend; they met when she was four years old and he was seven. She was related to Ensign Lt. Jose Joaquin Moraga, who was second-in-command of the De Anza Expedition in 1776. Moraga founded the cities of San Jose and Moraga, as well as the Mission Delores in San Francisco where he is buried at the foot of the altar. Gloria passed peacefully at her home with loved ones at her side. She was a graduate of Santa Paula High School, Ventura Community College (General Education, Health Science, Building Inspection and Safety Technology), and the Vocational Nursing School of California. Prior to retirement from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) as an Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator, she had 31 years of progressive work experience, 14 related to the health field and 17 to the safety field. Her significant accomplishments include extensive training and certifications that complimented her career such as a certificate from the McCrone Research Institute and from the University of Southern California. She was presented with letters of appreciation from the Commander of the Pacific Missile Test Center and from the Marine Corps, received multiple awards for outstanding performance and special achievement, and with her 10-year service award from DOD, a set of Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation lapel pins. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma Society and is the author of a published essay titled “ME BROWN AND FEMALE”. Gloria was proud of her Spanish heritage, passionate about her job and the personnel she served and protected; she was incredibly witty, full of compassion and generosity, extremely talented and knowledgeable, loved hard, fought hard, and wanted the best for all her loved ones. She has touched many lives and will be dearly missed.
Gloria is survived by her children, Raymond Velasco, Lisa Mobley (Glenn), Ronald Velasco (Katie), and Randal Velasco (Valentina), half-brothers, Carl Real (Maureen) and Anthony Marsh Jr. (Alanna), half-sisters, Rosemary Real Sladek (Robert), Debbie Real, and Valerie Hauptman (Wayne), step-mother, Dominga Real, grandchildren, Matthew Velasco, Breann McMickell (Nathan), Andrew Mobley, Kevin Mobley, Alan Velasco, and Rachael Velasco, step-grandchild, Jesus Ledezma, great-grandchildren, Haili Velasco, Ivy Oppliger, Abigail Carey, Ziarra McMickell, Jace McMickell, and Samantha McMickell, brothers and sister in Christ, Louie Luna, Richard Lopez, and Margaret Nava Garcia, God-daughters, Roberta Mercado and Victoria Velasco, cousins, Linda Arroyo and Anna Young, she loved both very much, cousins, Tommy Flores, Larry Flores, Philip Flores, Philip (Flip) Yvarra, David Yvarra, and Susan Yvarra, numerous nieces and nephews, many beloved friends, and cherished neighbors. Lastly, two loving pets, Chiquita Reina and Charlie Whiskers. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Leo and Josephine Real, maternal grandparents, Jesus Flores and Tomasa Flores Sanchez, step-grandfather, Carlos Sanchez, parents, Leonardo Celestino Real and Velia Marie Flores, step-father, Anthony Marsh, granddaughters, Brandi Marie Velasco and Jessica Rae Velasco, uncles, Jess Flores and Leon Real, aunts, Hope Vega, Irene Real Rodriquez, Helen Real Mata, Emily Moura Pacheco, and Cecilia Real Cubb, brothers-in-law, Albert Velasco and Henry Velasco, sister-in-law, Delfina Velasco Garcia, daughter-in-law, Sandra Carol Velasco, cousins, Jess Flores III, Rudy Flores, Anita Tellez, Rubin Corrales, Leonard Corrales, Jack Corrales, Philip Lozano, Linda Lozano, and Diana Rodriquez.
