Antonio Pacheco Desousa Simas, 85, a longtime Lowell resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 28, 2022 after a long battle with dementia. He was the widower of the late Maria J. Costa Simas who passed away in 2009 after sharing 27 years of marriage.
He was born in Terceira, Azores, Portugal on October 20, 1936 and was a son of the late Jose de Sousa and the late Elvira (Pimentel) Pacheco. He was raised and educated in Terceira and served his country in the Portuguese military. He came to the United States, settling in Hudson, MA. He worked as an appliance repairman in the Azores, and then at Honeywell Corporation in Hudson, MA for many years before his retirement.
Mr. Simas was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony Church in Lowell and was a member of the Holy Ghost Society, The Portuguese American Civic League “The Reds Club” and The Portuguese American Center “The Blues Club”. He was a fan of soccer and was an ardent supporter of FC Porto. Antonio was a jack of all trades and could fix almost anything around the house, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him and especially by his beloved son Tony.
He is survived by his dear son, Tony Simas, of Lowell; his brother, Fernando Simas and his sister in law, Eugenia Simas; his brother in law, Joao Costa and his sister in law, Vanda Costa; as well as his nieces, great nieces, nephews, and great nephews, whom he loved dearly.?
On Friday, March 4, 2022 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 9-10 a.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816.
His funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell.
