Melvin C. Ball, 81, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Monday, February 28, 2022, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
Graveside services will be held 1 PM, Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Evergreen Cemetery, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, with the Rev. Luke Smith and Larry Cobb officiating.
Mr. Ball was born September 13, 1940, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Clark H. & Cathalee Fender Ball. He was a 1958 graduate of Fitzgerald High School and worked with The Stuart Company before beginning a 38-year career with the United States Postal Service. Mr. Ball was a member of Christian Fellowship, Inc., where he was a member of the Prayer Team. He touched the hearts of many people with his sweet demeanor. Mr. Ball always had a smile, a joke or a prayer for everyone he met. Whether you were his waitress, his nurse, or someone standing in the same aisle with him at Walmart, you would soon be his friend, for Sweet Melvin never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda Helms Ball; daughters: Carol Ball of Fitzgerald and Lynne Shewman of Columbus; a son, William Charles “Billy” Ball of Fitzgerald; nine grandchildren: Lyndsey Phillips, James Phillips, Chad (Samantha) Ball, Corey (Mandy) Ball, Chris (Alexis) Ball, Lauren Shewman, Brooke Shewman, Johnny Shewman and Gaby Shewman; two great-grandchildren: Layton Ball and Emberlyn Ball; and one brother, Gerald Ball of Fitzgerald. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Jesse Howell Ball and Charles Edwin “Bud” Ball.
