Obituary

Frank Olbrych, Jr., 86, son of Frank Olbrych, Sr. and Mary Kuzniar-Olbrych, United States Army Veteran, died peacefully on February 14, 2022. Frank was born in Chicopee on July 18, 1935 where he grew up and attended Chicopee High School and played fullback on the football team who in 1953 went undefeated. After High School Frank attended Monson Academy for 1 year to prep for College however in 1955 Frank followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Army. While in the Army Frank received many commendations, 1 of which he was highly proud to talk about. Frank received a Performance Award Certificate where he scored the highest PT Test Score. After serving for 4 years and 6 months he was honorably discharged from the Army full time and he joined the Army Reserve. Frank’s Army service did include 6 months of active duty. After serving in the Army Frank returned to Chicopee MA and worked several jobs for the City of Chicopee until he joined the Chicopee Fire Department in 1965. Frank was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1973 and served as a Provisional Fire Captain multiple times for a total of 5 years. After 26 years on the Fire Department Frank retired with a total of 32 years employed in the City of Chicopee. Frank Olbrych married Carol Ann Black in 1965 with whom he spent the next 57 years with. They adopted two boys, one in 1968 and one in 1970. Frank leaves his wife of 57 years, Carol A. Black-Olbrych, his two children Lawson Olbrych and his wife Terry Amelin-Olbrych of Southwick, MA., Glen Olbrych and his wife Carol Champigny-Olbrych of Feeding Hills, MA., and 3 grandchildren, Faith Olbrych, Glen Nathan Olbrych and the late Nathan Glen Olbrych with whom he will be with in heaven and 1 step grandchild Michael Demichele. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Heritage Hall West in Agawam, for the excellent care that was provided to Frank in his stay at the facility. There will be no wake or funeral as per Frank’s wishes however a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chicopee Firefighters Local 1710 Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 373, Chicopee, MA 01014. The Grise Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
