Sister Marie Julie Devastey was born on December 12, 1938 to Marie Elcius and Xavier Thelusma in Gros Morne, Haiti. She was the second of seven children: Jacques, Jolinette, Murielle, Lucien, Jean, and Imadres. In addition, older siblings born of her father are: Julien,
Immacula, Bernard, Rosalie, Louis, and Benoit. She is survived by Immacula, Rosalie, Benoit, Jean and Imadres. At the age of 12, Julie and her siblings lost their mom months after her youngest child's birth. From that moment on, Sr. Julie made it her business to care and look out for her younger siblings.
In 1973) Sr. Julie immigrated to Boston, MA. She found community and was able to grow in faith by joining the newly founded Boston Missionary Baptist Church. While in the states, Sr, Julie took many jobs as a nursing assistant, caregiver to the elderly, and finally a school bus driver for the city of Boston. She also was a talented baker and enhanced her skills by going to pastry school. She made elaborate cakes for all types of occasions, especially weddings. Sr. Julie kept busy in church activities such as the Chorale Dames, and she served people however she could faithfully. While making good use of her time, she met Louis Devastey who was intrigued by Sr, Julie and after some time propositioned her in marriage. Their love was like no other and they persevered for over 35 years of marital bliss. In 2012, her late husband Frere Devastey was called to be with the Lord.
While tough as nails, anyone could see that the passing of her favorite person and lifelong partner started to wear on her. Nevertheless with God as her strength, she continued to serve the Lord. As the years passed, her health slowly started to decline. In 2016, she was diagnosed with Dementia and was later admitted to Brush Hill Care Center in MA. She pressed on for 6 years following her diagnosis until Sunday, February 20, 2022.
