SPRINGFIELD - Jacob B. Schmitt, 96, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022 at his residence at The Wellington at Springfield surrounded by all the memories that he loved and cherished. He was born in Albany, NY on November 4, 1925, a beloved son of the late Jacob J. and Catherine (McCarthy) Schmitt. He was raised and educated in Albany, and lived in Pittsfield before moving to Springfield where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Ship's Cook Third Class Petty Officer. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal, the American Theater Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal with One Bronze Star and the Philippine Independence Medal. He was employed as a Painter for George Fontaine Painting Contractors in Springfield for 23 years and later worked for the Berger Construction Company in Chicopee for ten years and retired in 1989. Jacob was an avid golfer who started in his 60s and continued to golf well into his golden age. He also enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, Beverly, and in his quiet time built miniature ships which are now considered prized possessions of many members of his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beverley Ann (Murphy) Murphy-Schmitt who was Called Home on November 30, 2020. They were married on October 27, 1979 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 41 years of happiness together. He leaves his two loving and devoted children, Patricia A. Richard of Springfield, and Karl D. Schmitt and his wife, Cheri, of Bedford, NH; his six cherished grandchildren, his five cherished great grandchildren; and his extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his dear son in law, Fred Richard who passed away on January 20, 2018. His burial will be private at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
