Mrs. Beverly C. (Christensen) Tobey, a longtime resident of Medford and beloved wife of the late Roger W. Tobey, passed away at her home on Thursday evening, February 17, 2022. She was 90 years old.
Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1931, she was the beloved daughter of the late Carl H. and Laura (McAuley) Christensen.
She is survived by her loving children; Bruce W. and his wife Diane WilsonTobey of Medford, Nancy E. Tobey and her husband David S. Cogen of Ayer, David A. Tobey and his partner Patricia “Tish” Gallagher of Melrose, Carol E. Somers of Roslindale and Barbara J. and her husband Brian G. MacCorkle of North Andover, niece and caretaker Ruth L. Palmateer of Brockton, brother; Carl H. and his wife Geraldine Christensen of Lynchburg, Virginia, grandchildren; Gary and Anneke, Jennifer, Melissa and Christa, Liam, and Katy as well as a dozen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Beverly was also the mother of the late Carla C. Goossen and Richard S. Tobey and sister of the late Carol E. Valitus.
She was Mom to 7 children, but “2nd mom” to countless others- with room in her heart and at her table for anyone needing a place there. She encouraged each of her children to be who they were, and to follow their own dreams.
As if raising a big family wasn’t enough for her, Beverly was a relentless volunteer giving her time to her church committees, women’s groups, and even a stint as cub scout troop leader. Though she would never say it herself, she was proud of her many accomplishments, including co-founding the annual Spring Fling at the First Baptist Church, were she has been a member for more than 70 years. She also trained as a Surgical Fitter, and worked many years at Craddocks Apothecary in Medford Square.
She loved to travel - family camping trips, cross country journey to see the Grand Canyon and Graceland, multiple vacations at the ocean side - be it with her family or many friends, she would be happiest just getting behind the steering wheel and heading down the road.
She was the keeper of family stories and shared them often. She grieved the passing of a husband, 2 children and countless relatives and friends with the grace and strength of a true matriarch.
She loved seeing things grow in her garden, and always made sure there was food for the birds and the squirrels. Everyone had a place in her home.
Her Memorial Service will be celebrated in the First Baptist Church, 29 Oakland Street, Medford on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 1:00 pm. Relatives and friends are most welcome to join us in her farewell. For those not able to travel, you may join us in her farewell using this Zoom link
