George J. McDonald 90, a longtime resident of Wrentham, passed away peacefully, Sunday February 20, 2022 at Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Care in Providence, Rhode Island following an illness.
Born September 17, 1931, in Boston, a son of the late John J. and Lillian (Powers) McDonald, he was raised in the South End and Roxbury sections of Boston.
He was educated in Boston and attended Boston Trade School.
A proud American he served in the United States Army during the Korean War, he attained the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in May 1954.
Upon returning home he was first employed by the Navy Department starting as a messenger at the Boston Naval Shipyard. Following the closure of the shipyard, he started with the General Services Administration in Boston and retired in 1986.
George is survived by his nieces & nephews including, Robert George and his wife Suzanne of Battle Ground, WA, Rosemarie Lauria and her husband Daniel of Braintree, Kathleen Gile and her husband William of Weymouth, Maureen McDonald of Orlando, Fl. and many cousins.
He was the brother of the late Mary Fairfull, Lillian George, and Joseph McDonald. George was also the proud caregiver for his beloved late cat “Tigger”.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour Thursday Feb. 24th, in the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. from 11AM -12noon.
A committal service with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
