James W. McDermott, Sr., 91

James W. McDermott, Sr., age 91, of Norton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton. He was the beloved husband of Florence A. (Rubak) McDermott, to whom he was wed on May 3, 1958.
Born in Canton, MA on January 25, 1931, he was a loving son of the late Francis L. and Grace E. (Simpson) McDermott.
Jim grew up in Canton and was educated at Saint John’s School in Canton. During the Korean War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman Second Class.
Prior to retiring, Mr. McDermott was employed as a millworker at the Plymouth Rubber Company in Canton. He previously worked as a truck driver for Mainco in Canton, as a bus driver for the Canton Public Schools and at Kilburn Glass in Norton. Jim had made his home in Norton for the past fifty years and was a member of the Lt. Harold A. Healy American Legion Post # 222 in Norton
Jim was a hardworking family man who enjoyed his retirement engaging in home projects, Jigsaw puzzles, gardening and spending time with family. He loved the outdoors and being in his yard was a favorite pastime. Jim was so proud of his Irish heritage which was evidenced by his natural born ability for telling stories, his quick wit and unique humor and of course endless blarney which his children and grandchildren cherished.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children: Cathy McDermott of Norton, Debbie McDermott of North Attleboro, Janet McDermott of North Attleboro, Pauline Harding and her husband Tom of New Hampshire, Susan McDermott of Norton, Mary McDermott of Norton, Jim McDermott, Jr. and his wife Robyn of Maine and Denise Briody and her husband Mike of South Easton. He was the cherished grandfather of Ashley, James, Cody, Samuel, Joshua, Matthew, Emily, Nathan and Cassidy. He was the dear brother of Edith Bowen and her husband Bill of West Yarmouth and the late Mary Coffee, Robert McDermott, Mille Clarke, Grace McDermott, Frances McDermott, Florence Leary, John McDermott, Lorraine McDermott and is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, February 18th from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp Street (Off Route 140, Taunton Avenue) Norton.
Burial, along with military honors will be held privately at the Norton Common Cemetery in Norton.
In lieu of flowers, Jim’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Lt. Harold A. Healy American Legion Post 222, P.O. Box 644, Norton, MA 02766.
