Bernie Magnus, age 92, of Franklin and a former resident of Newark, DE passed on Thursday, February 10, 2022.
Bernie was born on May 3, 1929, in McAdoo, PA. She attended Saint Gabriel’s High School in Hazelton, PA and Hazelton State Hospital School of Nursing graduating as a Registered Nurse. Following nursing school, she was Mrs. Alfred I DuPont’s private nurse for almost 20 years and concluded her career at A I Dupont Orthopedic Children’s Hospital. Her patients often referred to her as their warm and caring angel.
Bowling was her passion. She took her first lesson in 1962 and continued to bowl until age 90. She held several league positions and traveled the US to participate in tournaments. On October 19, 2002, she was inducted into the Wilmington Bowling Hall of Fame. Also, she received many awards for her well known volunteer efforts and ultimately being named Volunteer of the Year in the state of DE. Bernie was a devout Catholic and church was an important part of her life. She became a Eucharistic Minister and attended mass frequently.
Other hobbies included travel, crocheting, Elks Club, Newark Senior Center, and playing cards with friends. The love of her life, however, was her family.
Bernie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph; parents, John and Veronica Dvorscak; brothers, John(Doris), Bernard(Carolyn); sisters, Mary, Irene, Elizabeth; and sister in law Betty Dvorscak.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph B Magnus(Linda), of Newark, DE; Gregory J Magnus(LeeAnn) of Glen Allen, VA; daughter Sharon M Johnson(Tom), of Franklin, MA; her brother EJ Dvorscak, Arlington, VA; and grandchildren Monica, Ashley(Brett) and Hannah. She is also survived by many treasured family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022 at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE, from 9:30am-11:00am. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am, burial at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE. The family is requesting that all in attendance please wear a mask.
