Obituary

Lawrence Portier, 82, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Ocilla Church of God with the Rev. Clayton Dowd and Rev. Frankie Tyson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 Friday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mr. Portier was born March 27, 1924 in Ben Hill County, Georgia to the late Ivey J. and Ella Futch Portier. He lived in the community most of his life. He was the retired owner/operator of Lawrence’s Barber Shop and was a former meat cutter for A&P Grocery. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the African, Mediterranean, and European Theatre and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a member of the American Legion and an auxiliary policeman. Mr. Portier was a member of the Ocilla Church of God.

Mr. Portier is survived by his wife: Marjorie Tyson Portier, Fitzgerald; step-daughters: Brenda Holt of Fitzgerald and Debra Stone of Douglas; step-sons: Stanley Culpepper, Havana, Florida, Joe Culpepper and Bobby Culpepper, both of Fitzgerald; sister: Jessie Northey, Ocala, FL; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
