Susan “Susie” Hooker Woodward Twing, 77, of Noank, passed away on December 22, 2021, at Westerly Hospital.
Born on May 31, 1944 in New London Connecticut, Susan was the only daughter of Dr. Joseph Cutler Woodward (Lawrence + Memorial Hospital) and Emily (Chatfield) Woodward. A descendant of Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford, and of Mayflower passenger and Governor of Plymouth Colony, William Bradford, Susan was predeceased in death by her brothers Brian Cutler Woodward and Thomas Cutler Woodward, and her late husband Theodore “Ted” L. Steinetz.
A long-time resident of Groton Long Point and Noank, Susan attended The Williams School (WMI), Walnut Hill School, Garland Junior College and Charron-Williams Commercial College.
Susan started her career at the Miami Herald newspaper where she worked in Public Relations. Later, she worked at Lizette Food Service in Danbury as a Supervisor for 5 years and then continued her career at Mystic River Homes Congregate where she worked as a Chef and Food Service Manager for over 15 years helping the kitchen staff deliver over 50 meals a day to the residents until her retirement in 2007.
Susan was a fervent believer in giving back to the community and over the years she participated in many volunteer endeavors. During her life, she volunteered as a Docent at Harkness Memorial State Park giving tours of the Eolia mansion, as a greeter at the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center – Waterford in honor of her beloved husband Ted who passed away of cancer in 2015, and in various other roles over the years at the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut and the Women’s Center of Southeastern Connecticut.
In her younger years, Susan loved skiing, playing tennis and dancing, and later in life, she enjoyed playing golf and kayaking. She also loved cooking, reading, working on jigsaw puzzles, spending time with friends and family, and was a great lover of animals, especially her two kitties Kazzie and Mikey. Susan was always the life of the party, and her charm and contagious laugh will be missed by all who knew her.
Above all, Susan was a devoted mother, wife and friend and will be truly missed by her son Paul “Kingo” Froiland Twing II and daughter-in-law Amy Stott Twing, her stepdaughters Debra (Steinetz) Denton, Elizabeth Durkin and Kelly (Durkin) LaReau, and countless loving friends including her dearest friends of over 50 years, Karen and Edward Simonian.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center – Waterford and/or an animal charity of the donor’s choice. A celebration on her life will be held on a later date at the convenience of the family.
