Raymond J. Fell, 94, of Braintree, died peacefully at home on February 5, 2022. Ray was born in Boston, one of five sons of the late John and Elizabeth (Moynihan) Fell.
He graduated from Mirimar, a minor seminary run by the Divine Word Missionaries, in Duxbury. In September of 1946, he was drafted into the United States Army and spent most of his time in Los Alamos, New Mexico. After his discharge in 1948, he attended Boston College nights while working as a milkman days. Ray went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Bridgewater State College and spent his early career teaching and the majority of his tenure as a Guidance Counselor for the Hingham Public Schools.
In retirement, Ray along with his loving wife, attended daily Mass and weekly Adoration. He was active for many years at Holy Ghost Church in Whitman, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and alter server while also scheduling and training new altar servers.
A gentle and kind man, Ray was devoted to his family and his faith. He was ardent football and baseball fan and an avid runner. Starting at the age of 55 with just one lap around the track; two years later he ran a half-marathon.
He was a long-time member of the New England 65+ Runners’ Club and ran until he was 89, logging in over 8,000 miles and competing in 271 road races.
Beloved husband of Gertrude E. (Olson), for 70 years. Loving father of James Fell of Bridgewater and his partner Suzette Tavares, Marie Tarallo and her husband Ronald of Braintree and Tricia A. Dandrow of Cohasset. Loving grandfather of Lyndsey, Candace, Anthony, Katie, James and Cameron and great-grandfather of Penelope, Madeline, Skylar, Alice and Kiernan. He was pre-deceased by his four brothers, John, Richard, Walter and Lawrence. Also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. The family is grateful to all the wonderful care provided by Old Colony Hospice and the support of many family and friends.
Friends and family may gather on Thursday, February 10 at Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street, Whitman, MA at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at Holy Ghost Parish, 518 Washington Street, Whitman at 10:30 a.m.
