Hugo O’Brien of Jamaica Plain, a beloved brother, uncle and friend passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 64 years old.
Dearly loved brother of Christine O’Brien, Patricia Duncan, Mary Jane Bentley and brother-in-law Mark Bentley, and Carolyn Carter and brother-in-law Craig Carter. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Daniel and John O’Brien. Hugo is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Hugo graduated from UMass Boston and moved to California to begin his career as an English teacher. He loved living near the ocean where he could pursue his love of water sports, ride his motorcycle year round and was an avid surfer and cyclist. Years later he would return to the east coast to be closer to family and begin a new career in the Health and Fitness field as a Personal Trainer. Hugo was a dedicated lifter and the physical strength and discipline he developed over years of training would serve him well when he was fighting cancer. Hugo was a serious athlete and excelled at skiing, cycling and marathoning but his passion was paddle boarding.
Hugo was also a dedicated volunteer and cherished the time he spent working with advanced MS patients at The Boston Home. Reading, playing backgammon, camping and doing crosswords were his favorite hobbies when not out on the water.
