Elizabeth (Betty) M. Mahoney passed away peacefully in her Brockton home at the age of 91, on February 5, 2022. The daughter of Italian immigrants Gregorio and Maria Rose Lupica, she was a lifelong city resident who attended Brockton High School. While working at Claff Box, she met her beloved late husband, Richard E. Mahoney, to whom she was happily married for 63 years. Her most significant accomplishment was raising their eight children in a small, five-room home on Brockton’s East Side.
Elizabeth worked in the Brockton Public Schools as a Teacher’s Aide for children with special needs, where she positively impacted many lives. A faithful Catholic who actively participated at Christ the King Church, she was a St. Vincent de Paul helper and shared her famous cookies at First Friday coffees. An exceptional cook and baker, Betty always welcomed people into her home with a warm, kind heart and happily shared her fine food and goodies. She adored large family gatherings and celebrations and found great pleasure in simple things—trips to Cape Cod, lunch with friends, reading, discovering a rainbow.
Elizabeth is survived by her eight children and their spouses: Mary Anne Donahue and her husband Daniel, John Mahoney and his wife Virginia, Kathleen Miquel and her husband Robert, Richard Mahoney and his wife Maureen, Theresa Thyden and her husband John, Paul Mahoney and his wife Elizabeth, Patricia Flammini and her husband Steven, and Susan Lane and her partner Gregory Winner. She leaves 22 amazing grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren as well as many dear nieces and nephews.
Also survived by her beloved sister Mary (Lupica) Millett of Brockton and sister-in-law Mary Lupica of New York City, Betty was predeceased by her brother Nicholas “Leo” Lupica, and two siblings, Nicholas and Elizabeth who died in Italy.
Due to Covid, there will be a private wake for family members on Monday February 14, 2022 at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, MA 02301. The public is welcome to attend her funeral Mass on Tuesday February 15, 2022, at 10:00am at Christ the King Parish, 54 Lyman St. Brockton, MA 02302. Burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery.
