LOWELL Sophie (Sikora) Zolud, 95, of Lowell, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 3, 2022. She was the widow of Frank Zolud, who passed away in 1984.
She was born on December 7, 1926 in Staszów, Poland. She grew up and was educated in Poland until the Nazi Invasion, which took place while she was in high school. She was captured and brought to a concentration camp in Germany. There she became acquainted with a young soldier, Frank, who was also a prisoner of war in the same camp. Eventually, he would be her husband. After the war they kept in touch via letters. They remained in Germany working for a few years while waiting to be sponsored to relocate to the United States. A few years later, she was sponsored and moved to New York while Frank came to Lowell. She and Frank continued to exchange letters until she joined him in Lowell, Massachusetts where they married and made their home in South Lowell. She was a longtime active parishioner of the Holy Trinity Polish Church, and she would take part in many church activities, especially those involving the senior groups or making pierogi in the church hall. Sophie loved cooking and baking delicious, traditional Polish foods, and Polish Christmas Eve ("Wigilia") was her favorite holiday to show off her talents.
Sophie loved to spend time with her family, and she is survived by her son Steve Zolud and his wife Denise of Wakefield; and her daughter Mare Coultas of Chelmsford; her grandsons Rob Coultas and his wife Jill of Litchfield, NH; Zack Zolud of Worcester; and Tyler Zolud of South Boston. She also leaves her sister Genya of Poland, and was predeceased by her sister Maria, also of Poland.
