DUDLEY – Mary A. (Cardoza) Machado, 93, died at home on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, with family at her side. Her husband of 52 years, Francis R. Machado, died in 2015.
She leaves 4 children, Joan M. Machado with whom she lived, Roland J. Gagne, and Linda J. Chagaruly and her husband John, all of Taunton, Lisa J. Riendeau of New Hampshire; 2 brothers, Anthony Cardoza and his wife Mary of Swansea, and Edward Cardoza and his wife Barbara of Florida; a sister, Irene Carlone and her husband Anthony of Little Compton, RI; numerous nieces and nephews. Her oldest son, Michael T. Gagne, died in 2012.
She was born on May 26, 1928 in Fall River and raised there, a daughter of Antonio and Mary (Costa-Correia) Cardoza and graduated from Durfee High School in 1946. She lived in Somerset for 42 years before moving to Dudley in 2016.
Mrs. Machado was a skilled seamstress, working in sewing mills and making clothes for her family for many years. At the age of 59, she began a new career with Liberty Mutual, starting as a file clerk, then becoming a receptionist, and retiring a secretary.
She belonged to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Webster. She was a prolific reader of both fiction and print media. She loved to travel and visited many world landmarks with her daughter Joan.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, February 8, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, Webster, with a Mass at 11:00 AM in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 18 East Main Street, Webster. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Webster. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 PM Monday, February 7, in the funeral home. Her daughter requests that any donations in her name be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church to improve handicap accessibility within the church building. A reception at The Lodge Restaurant, 148 Gore Rd. Webster, will follow the burial.
