Barbara Ruth Kelly, 79 years, of Franklin, MA, passed away peacefully on January 30th, 2022, after an extended illness. She was born on June 17, 1942, to Catherine (Finnegan) Fletcher and George H. Kelly in Needham, MA, where she spent her childhood. While in high school, her family moved to Franklin, MA, where she graduated in 1960 and remained most of her life.
Barbara was a creative, resourceful, and spirited woman who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. An artist-at-heart, she had a whimsical, intuitive sensibility that was expressed in all aspects of her life. She was admired for her ability to harness magic from thin air, with a knack for making experiences more beautiful and exciting with each stroke. She was an avid gardener and amateur photographer, often gifting loved ones with hand-crafted cards and photo albums of memories well spent.
She shared her love of nature with family; her children will be forever grateful for the many outdoor adventures they shared together. She was an enthusiastic supporter of all their activities; oftentimes roaring well above the crowd. At 6 foot tall, her red afro, kaftan dress (circa 1970s), and enthusiastic cheers were a fixture on the sidelines. She loved to entertain, and her home was the central gathering place for extended family, friends, and neighbors. She was an inventive cook who could whip up a fabulous gourmet meal for a crowd at a moment’s notice. All were welcome at her table.
Late in life, Barbara went on to study early childhood development. Her greatest joy was caring for children; she eventually became the dearly loved nanny to Lauren, Gillian, and Peter. She adored her “kids” and they, too, benefited from her passion for all forms of fun-making infused with imagination, creativity, and sense of adventure. Above all, they will remember her special form of Barbara-magic, much like the rest of us.
Barbara is survived by her five children: Ernest Cavallaro and wife Paula, Rocco Cavallaro, Donald Cavallaro and wife Susan, Carmella Cavallaro, and Paul Cavallaro. She also leaves behind her granddaughter, Gigi, and extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved cousin Judith Hart, and siblings Nancy Kilburn, Catherine Aldridge, and Robert Kelly.
The family will announce the memorial service at a later point in time. To honor her memory, in lieu of flowers Barbara’s family asks that donations in her name be made to the Franklin Food Pantry, 43 West Central Street, Franklin, MA 02038.
The Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. is honored to assist the Kelly-Cavallaro Family.
